Suez or the Cape: shipping after the Red Sea attacks, 2022 to 2026

The Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope · 1 July 2022 to 18 October 2026 · AIS

Daily traffic through the Suez Canal and round the Cape of Good Hope, counted from ship AIS positions by IMF PortWatch. Until late 2023 about 73 ships a day used the canal. After the Houthis seized the Galaxy Leader in November 2023 and attacked ships in the Red Sea, the big container lines began sailing round Africa in mid-December. Since then the canal has averaged about 39 ships a day, and container ships have dropped from about 20 a day to 9. Traffic round the Cape almost doubled, from about 47 to 89 ships a day.
