Storm Pia on 21 and 22 December 2023, when the Maeslantkering at Rotterdam closed for a storm for the first time since 2007. The surge built along the Dutch and German coasts during the night of 21 December, reaching about 2 m in the German Bight in the model, and lifted high water at Hoek van Holland well above the predicted tide.
