Sea surface temperature compared with the 1971 to 2000 average, every two days from 1 August to 10 October 2026. Almost every ocean is warmer than it was then, and the ice-free ocean averages about 0.85 °C above that baseline. NOAA reported that September 2026 set a record for global ocean temperature. The El Niño in the central Pacific strengthens through the period, from about 2.6 °C to 3.3 °C above the same baseline.
