On a spring tide the sea in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel rises and falls by about 12 metres. At low water close to 200 km² of sand lies dry, and at high water the Mont becomes an island. The green areas are salt meadows, flooded only by the highest tides. The flooding is estimated from the tide level and the seabed height, so in reality the flood arrives slightly later in the inner bay.
