Two days of tide in the western Ria Formosa. Twice a day the lagoon fills and empties through the inlets between the barrier islands, and in the Faro-Olhão inlet, the entrance to Faro and Olhão, the surface current reaches about 4 to 4.5 kn, strongest on the ebb. At low water the flats and marshes dry out and the flow is squeezed into the channels to Faro and Olhão. The tide at Faro is shown in metres above chart datum (ZH).
